THREE (3) POINTS AS LIVERPOOL ARE KNOCKED OUT OF THE CHAMPIONS LEAGUE BY ATLETICO MADRID.
Liverpool have given up their Champions league crown after they lost at 3-2 at home against Atletico Madrid.
Diego Simeone's men progressed to the quarter finals of the UEFA champions league after winning 4-2 on aggregate thanks to a Marcos Llorente brace and a late goal from Alvaro Morata.
Jurgen Klopp's men did go 2-0 up in extra time with goals from Gini Wijnaldum and Roberto Firmino.
He are three points that will be talked about that made a stunning night at Anfield.
- The real Atletico Madrid.
Liverpool won't be able to retain their champions league crown.
Despite scoring the two goals they wanted going into the match, it wasn't enough as Atletico Madrid progressed thanks to a Marcos Llorente brace and an Alvaro Morata winner of the night.
It was the perfect scenario for Diego Simeone and his team.
Under Diego Simeone, Atletico has played the role of being underdogs perfectly as they thrive to spoil the party when not being expected. They are the gritty neighbours to the glamorous Real Madrid.
While the rest of Europe look to play beautiful football, Atletico Madrid look to frustrate the opposition, defend really hard and word very hard until they have nothing else to offer.
Someone's style of play isn't always pretty but it is surely beautiful in it's on way as very few teams would defend with such effect as Diego Simeone's Atletico Madrid.
It hasn't been an easy season for Atletico Madrid having lost Godin, Juanfran and Griezmann, the title winning side of 2013/14 season.
However, this was Atletico Madrid at their best having played as underdogs throughout the tie and later left the match on top.
2. The Holders Are Out.
What a strange season this could end up to he for Liverpool having been knocked out of the Champions league and the FA Cup in the space of two week.
The only thing that looks like will advastage them is that of winning the league title in over 30 years which is a reasonable consolation.
However, the only problem is that they won't have more silverware this season but they are surely going to lift the Premier League title at the end of the season.
This Liverpool square was more than capable of returning the European crown but in both legs of the Champions league round of 16, they weren't anywhere near to their best which wasn't enough to progress to the quarter finals of the competition.
Jurgen Klopp has lost a European knockout tie as Liverpool manager for the first time. With the league nearly done, it will be a moment to remember but their would be so much more.
3. Oblak and Adrian - The difference.
The value of having a world class goalkeeper at Anfield was essential. Liverpool were without first choice goalkeeper due to injury and in his place Adrian did not step up to the task.
The Reds looked to have reached the quarter-finals of the competition after Roberto Firmino made it 2-0 early on in extra time.
However, it was the spanish goalkeeper's mistake that led to Marcos Llorente scoring his first goal of the night in the 97th minute.
Also questions would be asked with the other two Atletico Madrid goals having been beaten at his near post by Alvaro Morata.
Down the opposite side, Jan Oblak kept Atletico Madrid fighting when they were under a lot of pressure with some outstanding saves and catches.
Oblak and Alis on hold their positions at the top end of goalkeeper standings in world football and last night showed just that.
